Contact: Nine Local Chambers of Commerce Form May 6, 2010. Tucson, Ariz. Thursday, April 20, 2010, nine southern Arizona chambers of commerce ratified bylaws forming a Southern Arizona Chamber of Commerce Alliance (SACCA). These chambers of commerce represent more than 4500 businesses in southern Arizona. The formative purpose of SACCA will be to influence local governments in southern Arizona to consider and enact legislation to ensure that our region is viewed as friendly to business – a good place to start a business and a good place to relocate a business. The Alliance will also emphasize economic development, orderly growth and business retention. As a first step, SACCA has issued a letter to Tucson Mayor Walkup and City Council urging the full staffing and regular meetings of four existing business commissions which have been severely underutilized – these include the Small Business Commission, the Land Use Code Committee, the Citizens Sign Code Committee and the MWBE Commission. SACCA has offered to assist the City Council, as appropriate, to identify suitable candidates for these posts. SACCA has appointed Ms. Lea Marquez Peterson, MBA, President/CEO, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as its first chairperson. Mr. Sheldon A. Fishman, MBA, CFP®, President, Tucson GLBT Chamber of Commerce, will serve as vice-chairman. While the initial emphasis on policy making and economic development will be within Pima County, the SACCA bylaws allow and encourage other southern Arizona chambers of commerce to join the alliance as associate or full members.
